Contact Lens Eye Exams & Fittings

Contact lenses are a great alternative to wearing glasses. There is a wide range of contact lens options for nearly every prescription and application. No wonder the choice can be overwhelming. This is why it’s so important to consult with your eye doctor, who will perform a comprehensive eye exam and a contact lens eye exam to help you find the best contact lenses for your vision and lifestyle.

Contact Lense Eye Exams

If you wear glasses and are considering contact lenses, you’ll need to go to your eye doctor for a contact lens eye exam. It is very important that contact lenses fit properly and comfortably, and that you understand contact lens hygiene and safety.

At your eye doctor’s office you will first undergo a comprehensive eye exam, and then specific tests to evaluate your vision with contact lenses and whether you are a good candidate for contact lenses.

The Contact Lens Consultation

Your eye doctor will measure your eye surface and may evaluate your tear film to see whether you produce enough tears to prevent dry eye syndrome while wearing contacts.

During the consultation, you will need to discuss some of your lifestyle and health considerations, to determine which type of contacts will best suit you and your eyes.

Other options to consider are whether you would prefer daily contacts or monthly lenses, as well as rigid gas permeable (GP) versus soft lenses. If you have any particular eye conditions, such as dry eye syndrome or astigmatism, your eye doctor might recommend a specific type or brand for optimal comfort and vision needs. Bifocal and multifocal contact lenses are also an option for those who need them.

Contact Lens Fitting

When it comes to contact lenses, one size does not fit all. To fit your contact lenses properly, your eye doctor will need to take some measurements of your eye. If your contact lenses do not fit properly it can cause blurry vision, discomfort, or even damage the eye. Some measurements your eye doctor will take for a contact lens fitting include:

  • Corneal Curvature
  • Pupil or Iris Size
  • Tear Film Evaluation
